Wedgewood Visitors Centre and Potteries Museum
Tuesday, 12 September
Cost: £ 42 per person (Lunch incl. Vegetarian Option available)
The six towns around Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, are known as the “Potteries” because they are the heart of the British china and porcelain industry that started there in the 18th century. This full-day trip will be accompanied by an official Manchester (Blue Badge) Guide and will take visitors to the Wedgewood factory (www.wedgewood.com), home of one of the most famous names in the world of china and porcelain. After a long apprenticeship, Josiah Wedgewood became a master potter and founded his business in 1759. He developed new materials, firing techniques and glazes that permitted new designs and dramatic improvements in quality. In 1765 he was appointed “Potter to Her Majesty” (Queen Charlotte, consort to George III). The appointment led to a huge and prestigious order from the Russian Empress, Catherine II in 1776, which was displayed for months in London prior to shipment. The trip will include visits to the Wedgewood exhibition and film theatre that will outline the history of the company followed by a factory tour that will enable visitors to see the production of the famous tableware and demonstrations of many aspects of the potter’s art. Self-guided audio tours are available in Dutch, English, French, German and Japanese. The wide range of fine vases, tableware and figurines currently available can be inspected in the extensive gift shop. The trip will also include a visit to the Potteries Museum. There may also be opportunities for those who wish to, to make a personal “masterpiece” on a potter’s wheel. Departure: 9.30 am. Arrive back: 5.30 pm. |

This is a full-day trip to visit Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, traveling through the Peak District accompanied by an official Manchester (Blue Badge) Guide. Chatsworth is one of the most beautiful stately homes in the UK, parts of which date back to the 16th century (www.chatsworth.org). Chatsworth has been the home of the Duke of Devonshire for centuries and the 12th Duke currently occupies part of the house. The collection of paintings, sculpture and books reflect the worldwide interests of successive generations and self-guided audio tours are available in English. Guidebooks are available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. In addition to the fine paintings and sculptures, the house contains the library of the scientist Henry Cavendish. This magnificent house is set in a beautiful estate of 35,000 acres, part of which was landscaped by Lancelot (Capability) Brown in the 18th century. The 100-acre gardens were designed by Sir Joseph Paxton in the 19th century and include the single-jet Emperor Fountain. The trip will also include a stop in the picturesque village of Tideswell, which is mentioned in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book and later was a center for the lead mining industry.
